TrainingRoom / Gasper's Thief Guide

Introduction

So you are thinking of creating a Thief and living the life of a once frowned upon group of individuals, those whom stick to the shadows using tactics and stealthed skills to overcome all odds and take from the rich and give to themselves.

These bunch of cast out scoundrels once walked amongst the wealthiest in the land yet now walk the streets begging from thy very neighbour hoping to make a living of scraps, Ahh yes times are tough in the eyes of the poor, every penny counts and a loaf of bread will feed a family for days.

Yet your path has been decided already, your vowels have been spoken and your rightful place has been cast.

You will plot your desires of wealth and greed by day whilst sticking to the shadows by night; only a fool would rival you as you are a master of arms, a jack of all trades and killer with vengeance in your soul.

Now then let’s begin with the necessary steps to getting you there.

When I create my Thief what skills should I choose?

Firstly and foremost you must be smart about what you wish to achieve with your Thief, do you wish for him to be a Thief that can take on the best of players and make it out alive

Or do you wish to make him a fencing Thief that can stand up in a fight with the likes of the very best swordsmen in the lands

Or do you wish to make him a thug Thief, which is basically an all rounder, if it comes down to it you can drop any foe you encounter and can take a lot of damage and evade your pursuer with your prize you have just stolen, or even take that mans very life for the prize you are after.

You ask yourself which path you wish to take as each requires different skills, but if sparing those skills is no problem for you then I suggest train them all.

The template is as follows

  • Stealing - (This require some time to do as you need to increase the weights as your level goes up to ensure you gain in skill with every level you move up)
  • Snooping - (This is easily attainable to reach GM status by simply macroing opening a backpack on NPC)
  • Stealth - (At least 75 to ensure you do not fail whilst sneaking up to your mark)
  • Hiding - (This is very simple to achieve as you can stand still and macro hiding until you reach 100, thus ensuring you will never fail unless you are close to an enemy or being attacked, your chance of hiding decreases, yet the further away you are from your opponent or target or attacker the better your chances are of successfully hiding)
  • Detect hidden - (Simply stand anywhere where nobody is near and macro detect hidden and click on for eg: monsters if you standing in the middle of Town, that way the chances of a monster being in town is very slim, so detecting there would succeed as it would not find anything, yet you will gain in skill because of it)
  • Tracking - (This skill is highly recommended as a thief as you are always tracking your target if he is on horse and you might lose sight of him, so its handy to always set your tracking encase he runs out of sight, you can always give pursuit to find him, or if he uses hiding to lose you, you can always find him that way)
  • Ninjutsu – (Another great skill to have if you will be utilizing the shape shift skill, using any one of the animal forms gives it advantages to a Thief as you are able to walk quicker or run faster than in human form, also you can do so in stealth mode, which has its benefits as well as using shadow jump for quicker movement as well as some attack moves that prove very useful in combat)
  • Fencing – (Another great skill to use as a Thief as there comes a time when you trade your bare fists for a weapon , having its benefits for quick and lethal infliction of damage or poison to a target, this proves to be your next best friend when it comes down to dispersing a foe quickly and silently)
  • Poisoning – (This is one of the main skills at a Thief’s disposal, it inflicts much pain and trauma to your victim and if he is unable to cure it, certain death always follows enabling you to quickly overcome your opponent and take what you want and then run for safety, This can be used in conjunction with shurikans, darts and also on daggers for quick and effective attacks)

How do I find marks to steal from?

This is where it gets interesting as there are always those lone souls happily carrying out there daily work in the mines or even chopping down a tree, yet you will always walk over a mass fight happening or some conflict between guilds or even someone taking on hordes of monsters.

This is where the Thief class shines as we can infiltrate any occasion undetected and unsuspected and get in and out before anybody notices you are there.

On more occasions than none the Thief will have the upper hand over the opponents as they are to engulfed in their ordeal of battle or farming creatures to pay any attention to you snooping there backpack.

The best places to start looking would be in any of the Felluca Facets, this is your home ground and territory as a Thief, anybody whom is in these areas are free game and at your disposal. Felluca is the home of some of the most unsavoury characters known to the realm, the meanest and fearsome roam these lands looking for their next victim, some cases it might just be you but it’s what makes us Thief’s that we are able to overcome even the best of the best fighters.

Stick to the shadows and you will never lose, it’s a simple motto that keeps you alive, the more you are out of their way the less likely they will notice you, watch their moves, always be one step behind them, yet always one step ahead, think like they do, try and find a pattern in their actions that will always leave you ahead of them and have an advantage over them at all times, this is what makes us unique.

If you can do that then you will know when it is right to move up to them pop open there pack and snoop to your heart’s content until you find what you are looking for.

Once you find it DO NOT HESITATE, take it before your opportunity is gone for good, they could reveal you and punish you, they could reveal you and your life will be flashing before your very eyes before you get a chance to even try evade them, you could lose all chance to get what you seek, so take every opportunity you get as it would be your last and make it count.

There are always hotspots where some players frequently visit that make it easy for us Thieves to find our targets, for Example:

  1. Bucs den – This is the original home of Thieves and a haven for pvpers looking for some action
  2. Luna – Outside the walls are free game, there is always someone wondering around.
  3. Doom – No longer pvp area yet there are always opportunities for a theft if you plan it right, waiting for portals to spawn etc is a great way to find marks.
  4. Minoc mines – There are always miners around these parts, not much to steal, but kill the miner and the owner will come running to protect his precious ore, opportune moment to strike.
  5. Tokuno mines – Yes there still might be hope for us Thieves if they bring back Pvp in there(Holds Thumbs)
  6. Dojo – Perfect place to steal as well as more than enough places to hide and lay await till a victim comes along hunting TOTs.
  7. Any of the champ spawns are perfect places to try out your stealing, simply hide in a corpse and wait for the player to kill the Koon, then sneak up and snoop, and as soon as you see something you like, steal it and run for your life.
  8. As for the above they are the more important locations but there are many more that I have not mentioned here, the rest you will learn to find out on your own as your travels will take you too many foreign locations.

Interesting facts about Thieves

Playing a Thief on a shard populated by PVM and PVP players is very hard as there is always a balance that you must adhere to, this meaning, if you know how to find either of the two you can strike it gold, but if you fail to find marks or targets you will lose interest as finding a target is hard enough, let alone finding something valuable on him to steal.

This is where perseverance pays off, the more risk you take the better the reward, yes this is partially true, but sometimes you wait so long for that very perfect moment only to stumble upon nothing.

You feel ripped off from the world for putting you in such a bad spot, yet it drives you to keep at it until you find something of great value to you, this off course is where as Thief’s we make our names.

You are remembered for what you did not for who you where, for instance a Thief whom targets high value players meaning, those whom you wouldn’t want to encounter on the battlefield as they would decimate you before you could even draw your weapon, these players are what we call high priority and high risk, as the risk is high, yet rewards ever so sweet as they always carry the best

stuff.

And vice versa the less strongly the opponent the less you will find good items for stealing, and they usually are not worth your time unless you wish to practice your techniques on.

What to remember when approaching for a steal

  1. Always remember to stealth up to your opponent to avoid detection otherwise you will be revealed and your entire plot will be faltered.
  2. Watch your mark to find his patterns or routines before striking
  3. Carefully plot what you will do to get what you want.
  4. Never just run in and hope you will steal something good, cause you will usually be seen an killed before getting near to your mark.
  5. Work in groups, its always good to have someone cover your back if the times calls for it, most occasions you will find your target in groups usually hunting parties, this is when you do not want to be detected otherwise your death will be very quick.
  6. Try avoid combat at all times unless you know you can over whelm your target before he realises you are about to take his life.
  7. If you fail on the first steal, don’t give up, just backtrack and try again, try a different approach, most times if you fail, the mark will assume you succeeded and running for safety, then he will feel safe thinking you are gone, this is where he is wrong.
  8. Never underestimate your opponent, yes you might be smart, but he might be smarter, most players whom are always out and about use Tracking skills so be wary before taking on another player.
  9. Use your skills given too you to overcome any obstacle that is preventing you from reaching your goal, meaning if you fail or die don’t give up, keep at it, train harder and you will be great.
  10. Try avoiding stealing from players unless your skills are almost GM in each, Stealth requires a minimum of 75 to not fail as much, you could get away with it with less but it is not recommended.

Some final words of fortune for you now you have decided on starting a Thief, travel light and never be afraid to take someone on head on, you are who you want to be let nobody tell you otherwise.

The final thing left to mention and most important to a Thief:

The Thief’s Creed or tenants and virtues that each Thief should live their life upon, only those whom live by the code can call themselves Thieves.

The code is as followed and has been handed down by generation after generation to what we know it as now.

The Thief's Code

The Code

  1. Thou shalt not steal from or loot fellow thieves.
  2. Thou shalt not purposely reveal fellow thieves.
  3. Thou shalt not identify disguised thieves.
  4. Thou shalt not kill fellow thieves.
  5. Thou shalt not follow fellow thieves around telling people that they are thieves.
  6. Thou shalt offer aid and comfort to fellow thieves when possible.
  7. Thou shalt not ask stupid questions that are thoroughly covered in the the above scripture.
  8. Thou shalt check the forum to see if thine question has already been answered.
  9. Thou shalt retain a sense of humor.
  10. Thou shalt not call thyself a thief if thou hast not stolen from thine fellow player.
  11. Thou shalt remember that thine profession is spelled thief and not theif.
